MISS PELL WITH BEASLEY ELEMENTARY.THIS IS A GREAT NIGHT FOR US TONIGHT.
BEASLEY, WE'RE WE'RE CHECKING OFF SOME BOXES HERE.
THE FIRST THING WE'D LIKE TO DO IS START OFF WITH OUR BEASLEY PRIDE.
WE DO THIS EVERY MORNING ON OUR ANNOUNCEMENTS AS PART OF OUR PBIS.
AND SO WE BROUGHT SOME STUDENTS TONIGHT.
THEY'RE GOING TO DEMONSTRATE THAT.
RIGHT THERE. A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS.
WE START ALL OF OUR DAYS LIKE THIS.
SO WE THOUGHT WE WOULD START THIS EVENING.
LIKE THIS TO. OUR BEHAVIOR MATRIX, WE USE THE PLAY ON THE WORD PRIDE.
EXPLAIN THAT TO THEM EVERY YEAR.
WHY PRIDE IS A SIGNIFICANT WORD TO USE.
WE GET HER ON THE RIGHT ORDER.
OKAY. ALL RIGHT, MISS COLLIER.
[00:35:01]

YOU CAN SEE HIM RIGHT HERE WITH ME FOR A SECOND.
THIS YEAR, SHE'S A FIFTH GRADER, GETTING READY TO MOVE ON TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN JUST A FEW WEEKS.
BUT WHO'S COUNTING? SHE IS VERY INTELLIGENT AND A KIND STUDENT.
SHE IS PART OF THE BEESLEY COURSE AND A LIBRARY HELPER.
HER TEACHER, MRS. MALCOLM, REPORTS KIMMY IS VERY HELPFUL IN THE CLASSROOM AND PUTS FORTH HER BEST EFFORT ON ALL OF HER ASSIGNMENTS DURING ACADEMIC CHALLENGES.

ALL OF THE STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL ARE ABLE TO COME IN THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR TO DO ACTIVITIES THAT SHE HAS PREPARED FOR THEM THAT CORRELATE WITH WHAT THEY'RE STUDYING AND THE SOLS. SO, MISS ALDINO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
IF YOU GUYS WOULD COME UP AND JOIN ME, PLEASE.
I GET SECOND? AND YOU CAN STAND BY YOUR THIRD GRADE.
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE? IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH? GOOD EVENING.
WE WANTED TO SHARE SOME OF THE AWESOME CROSS-CURRICULAR STEAM THAT SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND MATH INSTRUCTION HAPPENING ACROSS BEASLEY ELEMENTARY'S CAMPUS KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.
WE'D LIKE TO START WITH A SHORT VIDEO HIGHLIGHTING BEASLEY'S FULL STEAM AHEAD.
AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE VIDEO UP HERE.
HOLD MY BREATH. SCARED TO ROCK THE BOAT AND MAKE.
[00:40:04]
SAID QUIETLY, AGREED POLITELY.OUT OF CHOICE. I LET YOU PUSH ME PAST THE BREAKING POINT I.
NOTHING. SO I FELL FOR EVERYTHING.
ARE YOU? ALREADY BRUSHING OFF THE DUST HERE.
I TELL YOU ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF THE ENGLISH.
ARE YOU HEARING? YOU DID IT. YOU'RE DOING IT.
I. DARK MATTER. NOW I'M FLOATING LIKE A BUTTERFLY.
ALREADY BRUSHING OFF THE DUST.
YOU HEAR MY VOICE? YOU HEAR THAT? HE.
WE HAVE SEVERAL STUDENTS WITH US.
WE HAVE SEVERAL STUDENTS WHO'D LIKE TO SHARE THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN THE STEAM LAB.
THEY ARE THIRD GRADE BEAZLEY LIONS WHO USE SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE WHICH SURFACE CREATES THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF WHAT? FRICTION. FRICTION, YES.
AND WE COMPARED IT TO REAL LIFE.
AS TRACTOR TRAILERS COME OFF THE INTERSTATE, IF THEIR BRAKES FAIL, HOW CAN WE HELP SLOW THEM DOWN? SO WE TALKED ABOUT ENGINEERING AND THEY HAD HOW MANY VARIABLES? THREE. WHAT WERE THEY? SO THEY HAD THREE SURFACES TILE, CARPET, BUBBLE WRAP AND THEY HAD TO MAKE PREDICTIONS.
ROYCE. MOST OF US PREDICTED WHICH SURFACE WOULD SLOW DOWN THE.
THE BUBBLE WRAP. BUT WHEN WE INVESTIGATED ALL OF OUR TRIALS, WE DISCOVERED WHICH SURFACE.
WE'RE NOT SURE WE HAVEN'T TESTED THE CARPET HERE.
THIS IS A VARIABLE, BUT IN THE STEAM LAB, WHICH SURFACE HAD THE MOST FRICTION? THE CARPET. YOU GUYS WANT TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT WE DID? I WANT A REAL. YOU CAN GET THE ONE ON THE CARPET.
IS THAT WHAT WE DISCOVERED IN THE STEAM LAB? WE HAVE TO DO MORE INVESTIGATING.
ABSOLUTELY. MAYBE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARPETS.
AND THEN WE MEASURE TO THE NEAREST ONE.
SO WE TOOK THE SCIENCE, THE TECHNOLOGY, THE ENGINEERING.
NOT SO MUCH ART ON THIS ONE, BUT DEFINITELY THE MAN.
QUINCY IS A SECOND GRADE BEAZLEY LION IN HIS CLASS, INVESTIGATED FOR ITS MOTION AND ENERGY.
THEY WERE TASKED WITH A REAL WORLD PROBLEM OF CLEARING CROPS FROM A FIELD.
AFTER THE SEASON, QUINCY ENGINEERED A TOOL TO ASSIST FARMERS WITH EXPLAINING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PUSH AND A PULL. QUINCY, WOULD YOU DEMONSTRATE THE TOOL YOU CREATED, PLEASE? AND WHAT FORCE WAS THAT? WHOOSH! CAN YOU SHOW US A PULL? OH, FANTASTIC.
AND WE ALSO TALKED ABOUT MAGNUS.
CAN YOU SHOW US? REPEL CLEANSING.
FANTASTIC. WHAT ABOUT A TRACK? FANTASTIC. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
SO INTEGRATING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND MATH ACROSS THE CURRICULUM IS ONE WAY WE ARE EQUIPPING OUR BEASLEY LIONS WITH THE FIVE C'S.
CITIZENSHIP. CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS.
[00:45:02]
AND CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS.THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME.
YES. Y'ALL DID DO A GREAT JOB.

SO THE 18TH, WE GO TO CHARLOTTESVILLE FOR THE VSBA TO DISCUSS THE NORMS. AND I'LL PUT ON THE RECORD THAT I'M NOT IN AGREEMENT, BUT I'M WILLING TO GO AS A MEMBER OF THIS TEAM.
AND THEN THE 22ND, 23RD, JJ MOORE, THEY HAVE A MUSICAL.
SO IF YOU ALL AREN'T DOING ANYTHING, COME OUT AND WATCH THEM.
I JUST WANT TO CLEAR THE AIR TOO ON A COUPLE OF THINGS.
SO I HAVE PREPARED A LITTLE STATEMENT.
TRY MY BEST TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT I BELIEVE ARE ETHICAL AND WHAT IS BEST FOR THE COMMUNITY.
I HAVE SPOKEN UP AND FOUGHT FOR THINGS THAT I KNOW ARE LEGALLY AND MORALLY WRONG.
REGARDING DIFFERENT TOPICS, I HAVE ASKED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND INTEGRITY.
HAVE I BEEN MET WITH RESISTANCE? ABSOLUTELY. I BELIEVE THERE ARE THINGS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN DONE PER THE VA CODE, AND I HAVE AGREED NOT TO GO ALONG WITH THEM.
IF YOU READ THE MINUTES, ESPECIALLY FROM FEBRUARY 28TH, WHERE I PROVIDED A STATEMENT IN REGARDS TO THE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH COMPENSATION, YOU'LL CLEARLY SEE MY STANCE REGARDING THAT TOPIC.
I BELIEVE IN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND I WELCOME ANYONE WHO SHOWS INTEREST IN COMING TO SEE OUR SCHOOLS AND SUPPORT OUR DIVISION TO INCLUDE OUR STATE DELEGATE. I'M HESITANT ABOUT THE BOARD NORMS AND THE VSBA CODE OF CONDUCT, AS I FULLY BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE BACKED BY PRINCE GEORGE POLICY ARE LINKED TO THE CODE OF VIRGINIA CHAPTER 22.1 OR VDOE.
MY LOYALTY AND DUTY LIES AT THE FEET OF OUR VOTERS.
TO OPERATE UNDER THE REALMS OF LEGAL POLICIES, VIRGINIA CODE, AND VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT I THINK, HOW I FEEL, WHO I LIKE OR DON'T LIKE.
I'M ONLY ONE MEMBER OF THIS BOARD.
AND I'M THANKFUL EVERY DAY THAT I HAVE THE ABILITY TO SERVE AS YOUR REPRESENTATIVE.
THANK YOU. MR. JOHNSON, I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF AND THE TEACHERS FOR A TREMENDOUS DAY.
WE'VE HAD TO FOCUS ON CHILDREN AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE CHILDREN.
BEASLEY DID AN OUTSTANDING I LEARNED SOMETHING.
I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS STEM, AND THEY ADDED STEAM.
SO LEARN SOMETHING NEW ALL THE TIME.
JUST GREAT DISPLAY OF WHAT OUR CHILDREN ARE LEARNING.
AND I LOVE THE OBJECT LESSONS.
AND I CAN REMEMBER BACK TO SOME OF MY I GUESS, EXPERIMENTS AND THOSE SCIENCE, THE WHOLE, YOU KNOW, IT JUST IT'S GREAT THE WAY THEY LEARN.
IT'S GREAT. THE DEDICATION WE SEE FROM THE STAFF AND SO MANY THINGS.
I HEARD HOW MANY THOUSANDS OF ARTWORK WAS ON DISPLAY THERE.
I WANT TO THANK YOU, MISS BROWN.
FLETCHER, I PERSONALLY WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOUR SUPPORT IN THE SCHOOLS.
AND I WOULD PERSONALLY, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT IN OUR SCHOOLS.
I'VE ASKED FOR IT FOR A WHILE, SO THANK YOU FOR COMING FORWARD.
IT SHOULDN'T BE JUST ONE DAY OR ONE YEAR.
WE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THE VSBA PETERSBURG SCHOOL BOARD.
I'M FORM LAST THURSDAY NIGHT AT BRIGHT POINT COLLEGE.
[01:05:03]
STUDENTS, AS WELL AS FOR AFTER HIGH SCHOOL.BOTH COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND JUNIOR COLLEGES.
HELP BRING DOWN THE COST OF FOUR YEAR EDUCATION.
AND IT'S A WONDERFUL PATH FOR STUDENTS TO CHOOSE IF THEY CHOOSE TO DO SO.
WE ALSO HAVE RICHARD BLAND RIGHT HERE AT OUR BACK DOOR THAT ALSO OFFERS AMAZING EDUCATION.
I WENT TO RICHARD BLAND, MY SON WENT TO RICHARD BLAND.
AND SO I THINK THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL SYSTEM THERE.
VERY COST EFFECTIVE AND FAMILIES SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT ALSO.
SO BUT ONE OF THE WHY I BRING UP THE FORUM IS BECAUSE WE GO TO MANY DIFFERENT MEETINGS AND DISCIPLINE CASES AND ALL, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS BROUGHT UP AT THE FORUM THAT I WAS UNAWARE OF IS THAT PETERSBURG AND DINWIDDIE HAVE CULINARY SCHOOLS, AND I FOUND THAT TO BE VERY INTERESTING BECAUSE PETERSBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS, I GUESS, FROM ALL FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL, I'M ASSUMING SERVED THE MEAL AT THE COOKED, PREPARED AND SERVED THE MEAL AT THE FORUM.
SO I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN THAT BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE HERE WE ARE RIGHT HERE AT FORT LEE.
WE HAVE THE CULINARY SCHOOL RIGHT THERE, THE CENTER OF THE CULINARY CENTER OF EXCELLENCE.
AND I THINK WE SHOULD DRAW OFF OF THEM SO PRINCE GEORGE CAN HAVE A CULINARY SCHOOL.
I TALKED WITH A MEMBER OF MY CHURCH YESTERDAY, AND COLONIAL HEIGHTS HAS A CULINARY SCHOOL, SO I'M ASKING THAT PRINCE GEORGE STEP UP AND OFFER OUR STUDENTS A CULINARY EDUCATION.
IT'S A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY, AND THEY CAN HAVE A VERY LUCRATIVE CAREER.
I JUST PRAY THAT OUR FAMILIES AND OUR STUDENTS, OUR TEACHERS HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER BREAK.
SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILIES AND JUST FORGET ABOUT SCHOOL FOR A WHILE.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK THE GUIDANCE COUNSELORS FOR ALL THEY DO.
AND I ALSO ENJOYED BRIGHTPOINT.
AND I DO WANT TO PUT A SHOUT OUT TO THE PRINCE GEORGE ALLIANCE FOR EDUCATION FOUNDATION.
OUR THIRD ANNUAL GALA IS SATURDAY, MARCH 23RD AT 6:00 AND TICKET INFORMATION IS ONLINE.
WE HAVE SOME WONDERFUL SILENT AUCTION ITEMS, SPORTS TICKETS.
I KNOW PEOPLE HAVE A FIT OVER THAT.
JEWELRY. POOL MEMBERSHIPS, PAINT NIGHT AND EVEN HAVE GRAVEL DONATED THIS YEAR.
CHRIS MENTIONED WE ARE IN BUDGET TIME AND I KNOW THAT OUR BUDGET IS GOING TO BE CUT SOME, BUT I KNOW THINGS I'M NOT GOING TO AGREE WITH AND THAT'S WITH NOT DOING OUR RAISES FOR OUR TEACHERS.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO FIND OUT.
I DON'T WANT TO LOSE ANY MORE TEACHERS TO OTHER SCHOOL DIVISIONS.
OKAY. THANK YOU AND GOOD EVENING.
[1. Superintendent's Report / Information]
I TOO WOULD LIKE TO HONOR OUR COUNCILORS, OUR SOCIAL WORKERS, OUR TEACHERS, AND ALL OTHER FACULTY AND STAFF THAT WE HAVE.THE WORK THAT YOU DO EVERY DAY IS A MISSION FIELD, AND YOU ARE APPRECIATED.
I WANT TO SHARE THE ATTENDANCE INFORMATION AND AN UPDATE.
THIRD PAGE OF THE PRESENTATION, WE'LL JUST LOOK AT THE THIRD AND FOURTH PAGE.
IT'S IT'S IN THE EXECUTIVE SESSION SECTION AT THE BOTTOM.
AND THIS IS THE LATEST UPDATE THAT THAT WE HAVE FROM FEBRUARY 20TH.
OKAY. WHILE MISS CHRISTOPHER IS PULLING IT UP.
SO FOR US, WE HAVE 176 SCHOOL DAYS THIS YEAR.
WE WERE WE TOOK MARCH 5TH AS A ONE DAY THAT WAS A STUDENT AND STAFF HOLIDAY.
SO THAT GAVE US 175 DAYS OR 17.5.
SO ANY STUDENT WHO MISSES 18 DAYS OR MORE IS CONSIDERED CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM.
[01:10:04]
SO I JUST WANT TO DO A QUICK LOOK AT EACH ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS TO SHOW YOU ON FEBRUARY 20TH.THE WHERE THE PERCENTAGE FELL, IT WAS BETWEEN 11 AND 12 DAYS TO TO DETERMINE WHO WAS ON TARGET TO BE CHRONICALLY ABSENT AND WHAT THAT PERCENTAGE WAS. SO HOPEFULLY WE'LL HAVE THAT REAL SOON.
AND WHILE SHE'S PULLING THAT UP, I'LL JUST.
SO IF YOU WOULD GO DOWN TO THE LAST PAGE.
THANK YOU. SO YOU CAN SEE THAT IF WE USE THE 11 DAY.
SO 11 DAYS WOULD PUT YOU AT 19.6 AND 16.5 FOR BEASLEY.
SO WE'RE LOOKING TO NOT HAVE ANYTHING THAT IS ABOVE THE 25% MARK.
SO THE THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE CLOSE ARE THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE ED CENTER AND THEN NORTH AND MORE IF YOU USE THE 11 DAY INSTEAD OF THE 12 DAY, ARE ARE RIGHT IN THAT BALLPARK.
OUR SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN WORKING VERY HARD TO ENCOURAGE EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE.
SO THEY HAVE STARTED MANY PROGRAMS IN THE SCHOOLS, INCLUDING SEVERAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE CURRENTLY COMPETING IN MARCH MADNESS, WHERE THE CLASSES COMPETE FOR THE HIGHEST ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGE FOR PRIZES.
STUDENTS RECEIVE ADMISSIONS TO WHOLE SCHOOL EVENTS SUCH AS THE ROYAL GAMES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, THE DODGEBALL TOURNAMENTS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND RECOGNITION AT STUDENT AWARDS ASSEMBLY AT ALL OF OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
IN APRIL, WE'LL DO A PRESENTATION THAT SHARES SOME OF THE OTHER EVENTS THAT ARE HAPPENING.
WE'RE GOING TO INVITE THE SPORTS MARKETING CLASS WHO IS HELPING TO ORGANIZE THE ROYAL GAMES AND WHICH ARE ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS WHO'VE HAD GOOD ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR.
AND THAT IS HOW WE'RE WORKING TO BRING THESE NUMBERS DOWN, THAT IN ADDITION TO THE ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS, THAT ALLOWS US TO MAKE UP TIME WHEN CHILDREN MISS BY THE HOURS THAT THEY PUT IN TO EXTRA TIME BEYOND THE SCHOOL DAY.
THEY DO THAT AFTER SCHOOL, BEFORE SCHOOL, AND ON SATURDAYS.
SO AS WE SEE WHICH SCHOOLS ARE HAVE HIGH NUMBERS, FOR EXAMPLE, USING THE 11 DAY MARK AT PRINCE GEORGE HIGH SCHOOL, THEN WE WOULD FIND THE STUDENTS THAT WE NEED TO BE SURE HAVE THAT EXTRA TIME THAT ARE RIGHT THERE ON THE CUSP SO THAT WE CAN BRING THEM BACK AND BRING THOSE ATTENDANCE RATES DOWN BELOW THAT 25%.
SO JUST WANT TO KEEP YOU UPDATED ON WHERE WE ARE WITH THAT.
THEN HAVE AS MISS ANDREWS SHARED, WE DO HAVE THE PG F ANNUAL DINNER, DANCE AND AUCTION COMING UP, AND THAT'S USED TO FUND GRANTS FROM THE FACULTY AND STAFF.
AND THAT IS HOW THOSE FUNDS ARE USED.
WE HAVE PRINCE GEORGE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION COMING UP ON MAY 31ST.
AND WE HAVE WE'RE HAVING OUR MEETINGS FOR OUR NEW COHORTS.
OUR READING LITERACY AND LEARNING COHORT WITH LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY IS COMING.
OUR LEADERSHIP COHORT WITH THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY INFORMATION SESSION IS MARCH 20TH, AND WE'RE WORKING TO BUILD CAPACITY AMONG OUR PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATORS AND GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITIES AND EDUCATION TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THEIR NEXT STEPS IN THEIR CAREERS HERE WITH US.
WE THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATED AND WHO WERE ABLE TO ENTER ARTWORK.
MISSUS FICK SHARED WITH ME THAT MORE THAN 1800 BRACELETS WERE PASSED OUT TO STUDENTS ACROSS THE SCHOOL DIVISION WHO PUT A PIECE OF ARTWORK IN OR PARTICIPATED IN HELPING MAKE SOMETHING FOR THAT DAY.
I DO KNOW THAT THEY RAISED ABOUT $10,000 THAT DAY, AND THOSE THAT WILL BE USED TO FUND SCHOLARSHIPS AND PAY FOR THE MATERIALS AND RESOURCES THAT THEY NEEDED FOR THAT DAY.
[01:15:07]
KINDNESS COMMUNITY SERVICE, EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO DONATE HUNDREDS OF POUNDS OF FOOD TO HELP OTHERS.WE HAVE PRINCE GEORGE HIGH SCHOOL'S ROYAL GAMES WAS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE.
NEWSPAPER. WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THEM AND THAT THE STUDENTS ARE TAKING THE LEAD ON DEVELOPING THOSE GAMES, ON MAKING THE HIGHLIGHT REELS FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO PLAY BALL WHEN THEY GO TO COLLEGE, AND MAKING IT AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE FOR THEM TO HAVE THOSE THINGS TO SEND AND SHARE.
SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF ALL THE WORK THAT OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ARE DOING.
AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU.
THANK YOU. OKAY, FLIP MY PAGE.
ALL RIGHT. THE CONSENT AGENDA.
[I. CONSENT AGENDA]
I MAKE A MOTION. WE APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.SECOND. ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MISS TAYLOR.
YES, MR. ELY? YES, MRS. CHRISTIE? YES, MR. JOHNSON? YES. MRS. ANDREWS? YES.
[1. Financial Report for February 2024 - Monique Barnes]
I BELIEVE MISS BARNES IS ON.YES, SHE SHE'S IN WASHINGTON, DC ATTENDING THE IMPACT AID CONFERENCE.
SO THANK YOU FOR JOINING US, MISS BARNES.
THANK YOU. AND GOOD EVENING, MISS ANDREWS.
OTHER SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, DOCTOR PENTICOFF AND DOCTOR MARTIN.
THIS EVENING I'LL HIGHLIGHT THE FINANCIAL REPORTS THAT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN YOUR BOARD PACKET.
BUT AS THE OPERATING FUND REQUIRES ADDITIONAL ATTENTION AND THAT WE CANNOT OVERSPEND ANY PART OF OUR BUDGET APPROPRIATION, BUT ALSO SCHOOL DIVISIONS IN VIRGINIA ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY FORWARD A FUND BALANCE IN IN THEIR OPERATING FUNDS AND ALL THE REVENUES THAT EXCEED THE EXPENDITURES AT THE END OF THE YEAR REVERT TO THE COUNTY. AND THE NET EFFECT IS THAT THE COUNTY'S CONTRIBUTION IS REDUCED AND THE OPERATING FUND BALANCE, OR EXCESS REVENUE IS MOVED TO THE COUNTY'S FUND BALANCE.
SO IN LOOKING AT THE OPERATING BUDGET THE THE FUND'S REVENUE AS OF FEBRUARY 29TH, 2024, WE HAD RECEIVED $50,176,807, WHICH EQUATES TO 50.9% OF THE BUDGETED REVENUE.
AND THIS COMPARES TO 58.8% AT THE SAME TIME LAST FEBRUARY 2023.
AS OF FEBRUARY 29TH, WE HAD OBLIGATED AND EXPENSED OR ENCUMBERED AND EXPENSED $50,169,395, OR 59.9% OF THE BUDGETED EXPENDITURES.
SO THIS MEANS THERE IS 40.1% REMAINING IN THE FISCAL YEAR 24 EXPENDITURE BUDGET, AND THIS COMPARES TO 61.8% ENCUMBERED AND SPENT AT THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR, WITH 38.2% REMAINING AS OF THE END OF FEBRUARY 2023.
IN LOOKING AT THE AMOUNT THAT IS DUE TO THE COUNTY AND THERE IN THE HEALTH FUND.
I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVED ONLY CREDITS THAT OFFSET THE AMOUNT DUE TO THE COUNTY, SO THE BALANCE DUE TO THE COUNTY AS OF THE END OF FEBRUARY WAS ACTUALLY $56,611.47.
SO THOSE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS THAT I HAVE FOR YOU THIS EVENING.
I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS, IF YOU DON'T MIND.
SURE. SO HOW ARE WE AT OR NEAR THE SAME AMOUNT? OBLIGATED WHEN WE HAVE MORE OPENINGS THIS YEAR THAN WE DID LAST YEAR, BECAUSE SALARIES WOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS REGULAR OPERATING FUND? THAT'S TRUE. OF COURSE.
ALSO, WE'RE WE'RE, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE FURTHER ADVANCED.
AND THEN FINALLY, WE'RE HAVING TO FILL THOSE VACANCIES WITH SUBSTITUTES AND THIRD PARTY CONTRACTORS.
MM.HMM. SO WHERE CAN I FIND THAT INFORMATION LIKE THAT? IT'S BROKEN OUT.
SO FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE WE BUDGETED FOR X NUMBER OF SLOTS AND THIS MANY ARE FILLED WITH.
[01:20:07]
SO IS THERE LIKE.RUNNING THAT WEEK HOW MUCH WAS BUDGETED.
AND THIS IS WHERE WE'RE, YOU KNOW, THE NUMBER OF POSITIONS BUDGETED.
CORRECT. WE HAVE 2600 LINES IN OUR BUDGET.
SO TO GIVE THAT TO YOU EVERY MONTH, IT'S PRETTY, PRETTY CUMBERSOME.
BUT I CAN GET YOU THAT INFORMATION.
AND ALSO WHEN WE GO THROUGH THE CIP, YOU'LL SEE WHERE THERE IS MONEY AVAILABLE AND YOU'LL SEE WHERE WE'RE OVER OVERSPENT IN LIKE THE SUBSTITUTE LINES, BECAUSE WE'VE GOT TO MOVE THAT MONEY FROM, FROM TEACHERS AND THAT AREA THAT WERE NOT FILLED.
SO, YOU KNOW, WE CAN LOOK AT THAT WHEN WE GO THROUGH THE BUDGET.
ANYBODY ELSE? OKAY. WE DID LINE MRS. BARNES ITEMS UP SO THAT SHE WOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF ALL THOSE WHILE.
THOSE. AND FOR EVERYBODY OUT IN THE AUDIENCE.
THIS IS THE ACTION ITEM SHE'S GOING.
OKAY. SO THIS IS THIS FIRST ACTUALLY IS FOR THE TEXTBOOK FUND.
[1. Request for Approval for Supplemental Appropriation to the Textbook Fund (0520) FY24 Budget - Monique Barnes]
SO AS OF THE END OF FISCAL YEAR 23, THE TEXTBOOK FUND HAD A FUND BALANCE OF 59.THIS IS ONE OF THE FUNDS THAT CAN ACTUALLY CARRY MONEY OVER FROM YEAR TO YEAR.
BEGIN WITH. PRIOR TO APPROVING THIS.
AND YOU CAN SEE IN THE TEXTBOOK ONE BUDGET WAS 787,000.
AND THEN YOU'RE ASKING TO ADD TO MOVE FUNDS.
SORRY I'M JUST AND YOU CAN SEE DOWN AT THE ON THE PAGE THAT SHOWS YOU THE FUND BALANCE.
SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ASKING IS TO BE ABLE TO USE THOSE FUNDS.
WAS THERE MORE THAN ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER THE ENTIRE PROGRAM? AND I BELIEVE THEY SAID THERE WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH IN THERE TO COVER THE ENTIRE PROGRAM, BECAUSE I MADE SURE WE WEREN'T GETTING BITS AND PIECES.
SO I GUESS I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
I CAN EXPLAIN, SO FOR US, WE LOOK AT WHAT WE HAVE TO BRING FORWARD AND THIS AS ONE, BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO BUY TEXTBOOK WHAT'S ADOPTED OVER THE COURSE OF TWO YEARS.
READING AND MATH ARE TWO MOST EXPENSIVE ADOPTIONS.
SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THAT, WE PUT THAT MONEY TOGETHER.
ONE OF THE THINGS YOU'RE GOING TO SEE TONIGHT IS THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT READING MATERIALS.
AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHAT THE PRICE IS GOING TO BE FOR THOSE MATERIALS.
THOSE FUNDS ARE SET ASIDE ONLY FOR TEXTBOOKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS.
SO WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE THAT IN THE TEXTBOOK FUND.
AND WE HAVE A SEVEN YEAR REPLACEMENT CYCLE FOR OUR COURSES.
SO THAT'S HOW WE BALANCE IT OUT AND AND DO A LESS EXPENSIVE THAN A MORE EXPENSIVE, SO THAT WE'RE ABLE TO USE SOME OF THE FUNDS FROM ONE YEAR TO HELP COVER AN EXPENSE OF ADOPTION THE NEXT YEAR.
[01:25:02]
WE DON'T LOOK AT THOSE TWO AS SEPARATE.I AM STILL A LITTLE CONFUSED, BUT.
SORRY. DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING, MR. JOHNSON? NO.
ARE WE DONE WITH THE DISCUSSION? WHAT MY UNDERSTANDING IS WE'RE TAKING THIS OUT OF THE FUND BALANCE.
WE'RE NOT ASKING FOR ANY ADDITIONAL MONIES FROM THE COUNTY.
WE'RE JUST MOVING IT FROM OUR FUND BALANCE TO THE NEW TEXTBOOK FUND.
IS THAT CORRECT, MRS. BARNES? YES, SIR.
THAT'S CORRECT. WE MUST GET AN APPROPRIATION FROM THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.
YOU CANNOT SPEND IT WITHOUT THE APPROPRIATION, RIGHT? IS IT BECAUSE YOU'RE MOVING IT FROM ONE CATEGORY TO ANOTHER CATEGORY? CORRECT. SO IF IT WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED FOR THIS LITERACY TEXTBOOK, WHY WOULDN'T IT HAVE GONE TO BEGIN WITH INTO THE TEXTBOOK? BECAUSE WHEN YOU DEVELOP THE BUDGET, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR FUND BALANCE IS GOING TO BE LIKE.
SO YOU BUILD THE BUDGET BASED ON WHAT YOU KNOW, YOU'RE RECEIVING THAT.
AND THAT'S WHAT'S COMING FROM THE STATE AND WHAT'S COMING FROM THE THE COUNTY.
THEY'RE TINY MATCHING PORTION.
AND THAT GOES INTO BASICALLY THE BANK ACCOUNT.
AND THEN IT GETS ANY OF THE FUND BALANCE THAT MOVES TO IT.
AND YOU HAVE THAT IN THE BANK ACCOUNT.
BUT IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SPEND THAT YOU HAVE TO GO AND ASK FOR A SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION AFTER.
AND THEY WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE AUDIT IS FINISHED TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS.
OKAY. SO IT'S NOT EXTRA MONEY? NO, MA'AM. IT'S MONEY WE ALREADY HAD.
WE JUST ARE MOVING IT FROM ONE LINE ITEM TO ANOTHER.
WE'RE MOVING IT FROM TEXTBOOK FUND BALANCE INTO OUR TEXTBOOK FUND BALANCE REVENUE.
OKAY, SO WHAT ABOUT THE ONE TIME FUNDS THAT CAME FROM THE STATE TO HELP COVER THE LITERACY? ACT. SO WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL OF THAT? WE STILL HAVE THAT.
AND THAT'S IN THE OPERATING FUND.
SO WE PUT THE TEXTBOOKS INTO OPERATING THE.
WE CAN EXPLAIN A LITTLE MORE WHEN WE GET TO THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT TO ADOPTION.
SO IS THIS THE ACTION ITEM? A YES OKAY.
THEN I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE REQUEST FOR THE SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION TO THE TEXTBOOK FUND OF THE $598,374.
SHERRY. ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MR. ELY. YES, MRS. CRIST? NO.
MISS TAYLOR. YES, MR. JOHNSON? YES.
OKAY. REQUEST FOR APPROVAL FOR SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION TO CHILD NUTRITIONAL SERVICES FUND.
[2. Request for Approval for Supplemental Appropriation to Child Nutritional Services Fund (0540) FY24 Budget - Monique Barnes]
OKAY. ALSO, AT THE END OF FISCAL YEAR 23, THE CHILD NUTRITIONAL SERVICES FUND HAD A FUND BALANCE OF $1,491,551. AND THIS FUND IS AN ENTERPRISE FUND, AND IT ACTS VERY MUCH LIKE A BUSINESS.SO IT'S ALLOWED TO CARRY A FUND BALANCE AS WELL.
AND SO THEY ASK US TO SPEND DOWN THE BALANCE.
THE COST TO RUN THE DEPARTMENT FOR THREE MONTHS IS 906,000.
AND AS OF THE END OF FEBRUARY, THE FUND BALANCE HAD HAD A OR HAD A FUND BALANCE OF $1,206,426.
AND WE'RE ASKING THE BOARD TO APPROVE A SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION OF 300,000 FROM THE SCHOOL NUTRITION FUND BALANCE SO THAT IT MAY BE SPENT ALLOWING PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO STAY IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE STATE.
[01:30:01]
ADDITIONAL FUNDS WERE NOT ASKING FOR ANY NEW FUNDS.WE'RE GOING TO MOVE THESE FUNDS INTO DIFFERENT CAFE MACHINE AND EQUIPMENT, CORRECT TO RIGHT.
IF DOES THIS REQUIRE THE COUNTY'S APPROVAL? IF IT'S STILL IN THE IF IT'S IN STILL IN THE CATEGORY THOUGH.
JUST BECAUSE AN APPROPRIATION IS THE LICENSE TO SPEND AND THE COUNTY HAS TO APPROPRIATE THAT TO US.
GOT IT. EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE MONEY OR RAISE THE MONEY OR WHEREVER THE FUNDS CAME FROM.
GOT IT. AND EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO DIRECT COUNTY FUNDS THERE, I MEAN, WE HAVE SALES, WHICH OF COURSE COME FROM OUR STUDENTS AND OR FROM OUR FAMILIES, BUT THERE THERE'S NO AND THERE ARE NO TAX DOLLARS DIRECTLY FROM THE COUNTY THAT ARE IN THIS FUND, I UNDERSTOOD.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? I MEAN, I DON'T MEAN TO BE A PAIN, I JUST.
SO IS THIS REOCCURRING MONEY OR ONE TIME FOR THIS ONE? LIKE JUST PLAY ONE TIME REQUEST, OKAY? AND THAT IS FOR A CAFETERIA.
OKAY. AND THIS IS SOMETHING YOU DO EVERY YEAR.
IS THAT CORRECT? IF WE'RE REQUIRED TO SPEND DOWN THE FUND BALANCE.
BUT YES, WE USUALLY HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY FUND BALANCE AND THE STATE IN ORDER TO STAY IN COMPLIANCE, WE'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE LESS THAN THREE YEARS, I MEAN, THREE MONTHS WORTH OF OPERATING EXPENSES IN THAT FUND BALANCE.
OKAY. ANY MORE QUESTIONS? OKAY. I NEED A MOTION.
I MAKE A MOTION. GO AHEAD. GO AHEAD, MISS TAYLOR.
SECOND. ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MRS. KRIST. NO.
OKAY, ONE MORE THING, MISS BARNES.
[3. Health Maintenance Plan Renewal with The Local Choice for FY25]
THE HEALTH MAINTENANCE PLAN.WELL, I SEE AS YOU KNOW, DURING OUR BUDGET WORK SESSIONS, THE HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN RENEWAL FROM THE LOCAL CHOICE OR WHICH IS ANTHEM WAS ESTIMATED AND EXPECTED TO BE A 9.7% RATE INCREASE.
SO WE'VE RECEIVED OUR OFFICIAL RENEWAL PACKET PACKAGE FROM THE LOCAL CHOICE.
AND THE RATES FOR FISCAL YEAR 25 ARE INCREASING BY 3.6%.
SO ALSO ACCEPTING THIS RENEWAL PRESENTS PREVENTS THE DISRUPTION THAT HAPPENS WHEN EMPLOYEES CHANGE PLANS AND OUR DENTAL AND VISION COVERAGE IS INCLUDED IN THIS PLAN.
HOWEVER, WE DO OFFER A STANDALONE PLAN FOR DENTAL AND VISION.
IF EMPLOYEES DON'T WISH TO TAKE THE TOTAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE PLAN.
SO THE QUOTE FROM SENTARA AT FIRST GLANCE APPEARED TO BE LOWER, BUT THE PLAN DOES NOT INCLUDE DENTAL OR VISION COVERAGE AND DOES NOT TAKE OUT THE PAYOUT THAT PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WOULD NEED TO MAKE TO LEAVE TLC'S BOARD.
SO THE POOL HAS ABSORBED THE COSTS FOR PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS.
ALSO COMPANIES PROVIDE UNCHARACTERISTICALLY LOW RATES TO ACQUIRE BUSINESS.
HOWEVER, THE RATES TYPICALLY INCREASE DRAMATICALLY THE FOLLOWING YEARS, SO THE ESTIMATED RANGE FOR THE PAYOUT OF LEAD TO LEAVE TLC IS FROM 200 TO 400,000.
AND BUT IT WOULD BE AT LEAST NINE MONTHS BEFORE WE WOULD ACTUALLY RECEIVE THE FINAL NUMBER.
AND IT WORKS VERY MUCH LIKE WHAT WE'RE EXPERIENCING WITH THE COUNTY'S HEALTH PLAN.
PLUS, SHOULD WE LEAVE THE POOL? IT WOULD BE THREE YEARS BEFORE WE COULD CONSIDER REENTRY INTO THE PLAN.
[01:35:02]
AND THEN THE EFFECT OF POOLING AND THE BLENDING OF OUR CLAIMS EXPERIENCE GREATLY BENEFITED OUR GROUP THIS YEAR.THAT LEFT TLC AND RECEIVED A 29% INCREASE THIS YEAR BECAUSE THEY LEFT.
TLC WENT TO SENTARA LAST YEAR AND RECEIVED A 29% INCREASE THIS YEAR.
AND THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING BUT STAY WITH THAT CARRIER.
SO OF COURSE THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE ARE RATHER UPSET.
SO ANYWAY, IN A NUTSHELL YOU KNOW, WE HAD BUDGETED 709,000.
AND THIS IS ON THE SCREEN IS HOW IT WOULD AFFECT OUR EMPLOYEES.
WE'VE WE'VE PUT ALL OF THE ADDITIONAL THE INCREASES PASSED IT ON TO THE PASSING THE SCHOOL BOARD IN OUR BUDGET AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT WE HAD PLANNED AND WHAT IT CURRENTLY COSTS.
SO TONIGHT WE'RE ASKING FOR APPROVAL OF THE RENEWAL FOR THE LOCAL CHOICE.
I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE RENEWAL WITH LOCAL CHOICE FOR FY 25.
MISS TAYLOR. YES, MR. ELY? YES, MISS CHRISTIE? YES. MR. JOHNSON? YES.
OKAY. IS THAT IT FOR MISS BARNES? THAT IS IT FOR MISS BARNES.
OKAY. NEW STUDENT CLUB AT DJ MOORE AND B CLEMENTS JUNIOR HIGH S SPORTS CLUB.
[4. New Student Clubs at J.E.J. Moore Middle / N.B. Clements Junior High School – EsportsClub - Abbie Martin, Matt Weston, Nick Ligatti]
THANK YOU, MISS BARNES.ON THE BEHALF OF JJ MOORE AND M.E.
GOOD EVENING, DOCTOR, AND THE BOARD MEMBERS.
SO IN DECEMBER MR. YORK AND I FROM MOORE WENT TO THE VISTA CONFERENCE AND WE GOT TO SEE SOME PRESENTATIONS ON ESPORTS AND THE IMPACT THAT IT WOULD MAKE FOR THE STUDENTS.
AND SO WE HAVE BEEN PARTNERING WITH HENRICO TO REALLY SEE HOW THEY'RE DOING IT.
SO IF YOU WILL SCROLL TO THE NEXT THERE IS OR DO I GET TO DO THAT? SORRY. OH, ME.
AND THEN SO I HAVE A VIDEO, JUST A SHORT CLIP TO SEE.
THIS IS ONE OF THE HENRICO EVENTS.
SO YOU CAN REALLY SEE IT IN ACTION.
THIS IS THREE SCHOOLS COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER.
AND IT KIND OF PUTS ALL OF THE THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE.
SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND HOW THEY'RE COLLABORATING CHEERING EACH OTHER ON.
ALL RIGHT. YOU WANT ME TO SHARE IT WITH YOU FROM GOOGLE REALLY QUICK, OR JUST ROLL ON AND NOT WORRY ABOUT IT? OKAY, WE'LL JUST ROLL ON.
SO IT IS A SHORT CLIP JUST TO SHOW YOU THE DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT HOW IT'S SOME HIGHLIGHTS.
SO ESPORTS IS JUST IT'S ELECTRONIC SPORTS.
IT'S INTEGRATING VIDEO GAMING INTO AN ORGANIZED EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY.
SO WE WANT TO ENGAGE THE LEARNERS THAT HAVE AN INTEREST IN GAMING THROUGH AN ESPORTS CLUB.
THE DATA SHOWS THAT THERE IS AN ENGAGEMENT.
YOU'LL NOTICE ON THIS GRAPH LIKE A LARGE DROP.
AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HOPE IS TO BRING ENGAGEMENT UP WITH AN E-SPORTS CLUB, BECAUSE WE'RE HOPING THAT THEY WILL HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION TO THEIR SCHOOL, THEY'LL INCREASE THEIR ATTENDANCE AND ENGAGEMENT, AND THEN IT'LL ALSO EXPAND THEIR COLLEGE AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, INCLUDING THE SCHOLARSHIPS AND STEM CAREERS.
[01:40:01]
SO AROUND 90% OF TEENAGERS ALREADY PLAY VIDEO GAMES, AS I'M SURE YOU'RE PROBABLY AWARE.SO WE WANT TO HIT THOSE STUDENTS THAT MAYBE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN TRADITIONAL SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES, BUT THEN CAN INVOLVE THEMSELVES IN ESPORTS TO ACTIVATE THESE STUDENTS THAT WERE NOT ENGAGED.
AND THAT WAY THEY HAVE A SENSE OF BELONGING WITHIN THEIR SCHOOL AND THEIR COMMUNITY AND TO HOPEFULLY BRING UP THEIR ATTENDANCE, THEIR FOCUS, THEIR TEST SCORES AND THEIR GRADUATION RATES.
MANY COLLEGES IN OUR AREA ALREADY HAVE VERY LARGE ESPORTS CLUBS AND OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO BE A PART OF THEM, AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE WOULD LOVE FOR OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO TAP IN AS THEY MOVE ON TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND, AND ALSO CAREERS THAT IT WILL HELP THEM PREPARE FOR.
YOU JUST SEE A FEW OF THE COLLEGES THERE THAT HAVE VERY LARGE PROGRAMS. SO AT WARREN CLEMENTS, WE WOULD LOVE TO CREATE AN ESPORTS CLUB TO CREATE INCREASE OUR CONNECTION WITH OUR STUDENTS, THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITY, ATTENDANCE THROUGH THE ALL IN PROGRAM, THEIR WELL-BEING, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, AND HELPING TO REDUCE NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS.
MR. WESTON AND I ARE GOING TO SEE ONE OF THEIR CLUB MEETINGS.
SO WE ARE VERY THANKFUL FOR HENRICO AND THEIR PARTNERSHIP.
AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT REALLY STUCK OUT WITH ME IS ONE OF THE STUDENTS SAID THERE WAS A CHILD AT THEIR CLUB AND THEY HAD NEVER THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHO IT WAS BECAUSE THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THAT CHILD WITHOUT THEIR HOOD ON.
ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? IS THERE ANY COST ASSOCIATED AS FAR AS THE SCHOOL? YES, THERE IS GOING TO BE.
SO THE SWITCHES, THE CONTROLS, THE GAMES, THOSE CAN ALL BE PURCHASED AT DIFFERENT LEVELS.
SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE PTO FUNDS, YOU CAN FUNDRAISE DIRECTLY FOR IT.
THERE'S POTENTIAL TO USE ACTUAL OPERATION COSTS FOR IT THROUGH SUPPORT OF LIKE OUR ARTS PROGRAMS. SO THERE ARE WAYS TO ACQUIRE THESE THROUGH FUNDS THAT WE ALREADY HAVE.
AND THEN THE PROGRAM CAN GROW AT DIFFERENT RATES DEPENDING ON INTEREST AND CAPABILITY AND CAPACITY.
AND IF MORE WE WE'VE APPLIED FOR A COUPLE GRANTS.
I'M STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK.
AND I'LL ADD, I SPOKE WITH COACH CARROLL ABOUT THIS AS FAR AS DID IT QUALIFY FOR VHSL.
THEY NEED ONE MORE YEAR TO MAKE THE DETERMINATION IF ESPORTS IS GOING TO PROGRESS, TO BE A VHSL RECOGNIZED SPORT, OR IF IT'S GOING TO STAY UNDER THE HEADING OF CLUBS. SO THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE ON WHETHER OR NOT WE FUND A COACH OR THE PROGRAM.
AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS WITH VHSL? I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE HAD THIS BACK.
WHEN MISS WILDER'S BROTHER WAS IN SCHOOL, HE MIGHT HAVE WANTED TO GO MORE.
I MEAN, I'VE ALWAYS SAID MY KIDS WERE NEVER I WASN'T BLESSED WITH KIDS THAT WERE VERY ATHLETIC.
BUT BOTH OF MY BOYS ARE THE ESPECIALLY THE LITTLE ONE, THE GAMER.
SO I COULD TOTALLY SEE HIM AND IN THERE.
I JUST DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS SUCH A THING.
THERE WAS AN ACTUAL CLUB FOR IT.
IT'S REALLY GROWN AND IT'S HUGE ON COLLEGE LEVEL.
IT'S ACTUALLY THE NUMBER ONE GROWING COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP RIGHT NOW.
AND THERE ARE PLACES THAT ARE FOLDING PROGRAMS TO ADD THESE SPORTS BECAUSE.
WOW. WELL, I THINK EVEN AT THE ART THEY WERE SAYING, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK OF ART, BUT IT'S LIKE NOW THE LIKE THE GRAPHIC DESIGNS AND STUFF LIKE, SO AN ARTIST, YOU KNOW, YOU THINK OF JUST LIKE PAINTING.
BUT NOW THEY'RE IN THERE DOING LIKE ALL THESE GRAPHIC DESIGNS AND STUFF.
SO IT'S REALLY ONLINE GAMES AND IT'S NOT JUST THE, YOU KNOW, WE THINK OF IT LIKE, LIKE FOOTBALL WHERE YOU'RE THE PLAYER, YOU'RE JUST A PLAYER IN IT. FOR EA SPORTS, IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
[01:45:08]
YOU'RE THE PROGRAM SPONSORS AND PROMOTERS.SO THE KIDS TAKE A FULL RESPONSIBILITY ON WITH THIS.
THEY DO THE SHOUTCASTING, WHICH IS JUST THE COMMENTATING, OR THEY'RE BROADCASTING IT, OR THEY'RE THE ONES STREAMING IT, CUTTING IT AND PIECING IT TOGETHER SO THAT IT CAN BE UPLOADED TO GRAB PEOPLE TO COME AND WATCH THE TEAMS PLAY THROUGH DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE YOUTUBE AND SWITCH AND SOME OTHER PLACES LIKE THAT.
SO THERE'S A HUGE, HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED.
THE CLUB IS JUST A BASELINE PLACE TO SHOW INTEREST.
AND, YOU KNOW, WE'VE GIVEN THIS MULTIPLE YEARS TO KIND OF GROW COMING OUT.
WE NEEDED OUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES TO KIND OF REEMERGE AND GET THOSE STUDENTS BACK ACTIVE BEFORE WE BROUGHT THIS IN, BECAUSE WE DIDN'T WANT TO MAKE WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS. THIS IS A REALLY BIG OPPORTUNITY.
I REMEMBER WHEN SOCCER STARTED AS A CLUB SPORT IN PRINCE GEORGE.
LOOK AT US IN SCHOOL OR LIKE BEFORE OR AFTER.
IT CAN BE RUN AS AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, IT CAN BE RUN AS AN INTERNAL CLUB TIME ACTIVITY AS WELL.
CLEMENTS WILL PROBABLY RUN MORE LIKELY AFTER SCHOOL.
DO WE MONITOR THE GAMES THAT YOU USE? I MEAN, SO THAT'S WHY WE PICKED THE TWO TWO THAT WE PICKED OR JUST SMASH BROTHERS AND MARIO KART.
YOU'RE PLAYING LOCAL ONLY, SO YOU'RE NOT FARMING OUT AND PLAYING PEOPLE ALL OVER THE PLACE.
THEY'RE NONVIOLENT. THESE ARE NOT FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS.
BUT A LOT OF ACTION TO IT THAT KEEPS PEOPLE INVOLVED.
AND THESE ARE THINGS. THANK YOU.
MR. BRUBAKER DOES HAVE THE VIDEO NOW, SO YOU CAN REALLY SEE IT IN ACTION.
I THINK THE VIDEO KIND OF SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.
WE HAD A SMASH INTO SUMMER TOURNAMENT FOR EA SPORTS.
THERE ARE THREE SCHOOLS OUR SCHOOL, BROOKLYN AND FAIRFIELD, AND IT WAS VERY EXCITING FOR ME TO.
BECAUSE THERE'S COLLABORATION, THERE'S CRITICAL THINKING.
SO THERE'S ALL THOSE ELEMENTS THAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED WITH EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND SPORTS BECAUSE ALL THOSE LIFE SKILLS THAT YOU ATTAIN PARTICIPATING IN THOSE.
HE. HE BASICALLY WE GET INTO GROUPS OF TWO FROM THREE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.
SO WE HAD SIX PEOPLE IN TOTAL AND WE JUST PLAYED SUPER SMASH BROTHERS.
SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS DIFFERENT POINTS FOR EACH PLACE, AND THERE WAS TWO PEOPLE FOR EACH TEAM, AND YOU GOT MORE POINTS FOR FIRST PLACE, LIKE TEN, AND THEN SECOND PLACE WAS LIKE EIGHT AND SO ON.
WELL, I NEEDED SOMETHING TO DO THAT WOULD ALLOW ME TO CONNECT WITH OTHER PEOPLE.
AND I ALSO HAVE A BIG PASSION FOR PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, AND I KNOW THAT I'M NOT BEING JUDGED AT ALL.
WE'RE ALL JUST THERE TO HAVE FUN AND I GET TO TALK WITH OTHERS, LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM.
YEAH, YOU GET BETTER AT LIKE JUST COMMUNICATION AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
JUST LIKE KNOWING EACH OTHER AND LIKE KNOWING WHAT THEY'RE GOOD AT AND WHAT YOU'RE NOT GOOD AT.
SO YOU CAN, LIKE, BE THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.
[01:50:30]
WE NEED.THE FEEDBACK WAS SUPER POSITIVE.
SUPER GRATEFUL FOR THE HENRICO EDUCATION FOUNDATION FOR BELIEVING IN THIS CONCEPT.
I KNOW THEY'RE VERY INTERESTED AND FINDING NEW INNOVATIVE WAYS TO CONNECT OUR STUDENTS TO SCHOOL.
AND I THINK DOING THIS IS LIKE ENCOURAGING AND HELPFUL BECAUSE YOU GET TO LEARN HOW TO WORK AS A TEAM OR AS PARTNERS AT A YOUNG AGE, AND YOU CAN USE THOSE SKILLS WHEN YOU'RE GROWN UP IN LIFE.
IT'S REALLY GOOD FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND REALLY GETTING MORE INVOLVED WITH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.
WE'RE LOOKING TO EXPAND TO ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS NEXT YEAR.
WE COULD HAVE AN ESPORTS LEAGUE WHERE ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE COMPETING.
THEY'D ONLY BEEN IN OPERATION ABOUT SIX MONTHS.
THEY HAD THAT EVENT OVER THE SUMMER.
SO I JUST. AND THERE'S NO COST RIGHT NOW.
IN ADDITION, NOW THEY'RE WORKING TO RECOVER IT THROUGH GRANTS.
AND, YOU KNOW, THE PGA IS HAVING AN AUCTION AND DINNER AND DANCE THIS COMING UP.
AND THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING GOOD FOR YOU GUYS TO APPLY FOR.
YES. BECAUSE WE KIND OF FELL OFF THE RADAR LAST YEAR.
SO WE NEED TO GET BACK GOING AGAIN.
WE DID VERY WELL LAST YEAR AT OUR DINNER, SO I'M HOPING TO DO EVEN BETTER THIS YEAR.
SO WE MIGHT THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING Y'ALL WANT TO APPLY FOR.
BECAUSE IT WOULD HELP A LOT OF STUDENTS.
INCORPORATE IT INTO THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAY.
THEY DO THEIRS AS PART OF THEIR CLUB ACTIVITIES.
AND THEN THEY ALSO, I BELIEVE, HAVE LIKE BECAUSE WHEN WE GO TO VISIT, WE'RE GOING FROM 815 I THINK.
TO NINE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
IT'S ABOUT 30 TO 45 MINUTES IN THEIR MORNINGS.
KIDS SPEND ENOUGH TIME AS IT IS IN FRONT OF ELECTRONICS AT HOME.
AND FOR ME, IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT FOR A CLUB, IT CAN BE AFTER SCHOOL.
I'M NOT GOING TO AGREE TO IT BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY WHEN WE'RE THERE TO LEARN.
I KNOW FOR FOR MORE, BECAUSE I KNOW MR. WESTON MENTIONED. WE HAVE.
WE DO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME.
WE HAVEN'T DECIDED EXACTLY WHEN IT WOULD BE.
I HAVE NO PROBLEM. A LOT OF OUR OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE AFTER.
STUDENTS START ARRIVING AT MORE.
BUT INSTRUCTION DOESN'T. SO WE CAN ALSO.
AGAIN. THEY SPEND ENOUGH TIME AT HOME ON THE GAMES DOING THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.
I THINK EVEN THE THOUGHT OF PUTTING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF INSTRUCTIONAL DAY, I'M NOT DOING THAT.
[01:55:03]
SO IF THAT'S THE APPROVAL WE HAVE TO GIVE TONIGHT IS TO PUT IT IN THE MIDDLE OF INSTRUCTIONAL DAY.I NEED TO NOT DO IT DURING THE.
ANYBODY ELSE? IS THAT JUST FOR MORE? IS THAT FOR CLEMENTS ALSO? BOTH PLACES? YEAH.
CLEMENTS SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO THEIRS AFTER.
I MEAN, I SEE IT AS A LIKE THEY'RE DOING ANOTHER SPORT BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF KIDS WHO DON'T PLAY SOCCER AND BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL, BUT THEY ARE INTO THE VIDEO GAMES.
AND IF IT'S IT'S NOT GOING TO BE R-RATED VIDEO GAMES WHEN IT'S A SCHOOL FUNCTION.
SO AND I UNDERSTAND ABOUT HAVING IT AFTER SCHOOL OR BEFORE SCHOOL.
WE USED TO HAVE THE ZERO HOUR CLASS.
I KNOW YEARS AGO WHEN A KID WANTED TO TAKE AN EXTRA CLASS.
I'M NOT SURE WHEN THAT HAPPENED.
IT'S BEEN YEARS, BUT PARENTS WOULD BRING THEIR KIDS FOR THAT.
THAT WAS THE CULMINATION OF YOU SEEING IT ALL COME TOGETHER.
THE CLUB MEETING IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
IT'S JUST THE CLUB MEETING TOGETHER.
THEY'RE WORKING IN A MUCH SMALLER SCALE.
THAT WAS JUST A CULMINATING EVENT WHERE IT ALL CAME.
KIND OF LIKE A DISTRICT TYPE GAME.
OKAY, THE CLUB MEETING IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
AND LIKE I SAID, WE'RE GOING TO GO VISIT.
AND DO YOU ALL HAVE SPONSOR? OKAY, OKAY.
WE WILL LOOK FOR SPONSORSHIPS.
THERE ARE ACADEMIC ESPORTS EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ALONG WITH THIS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT.
BUT UNTIL THE APPROVAL OF THE CLUB WE CAN'T MOVE INTO.
BUT, YOU KNOW, TO RUN, TO GET THE BEGINNING, GET EVERYTHING UP AND RUNNING AND TO GO AND GET GOING WITH IT BEFORE SCHOOL, YOU KNOW, UNTIL ACADEMIC TIME STARTS AFTER SCHOOL, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SPORT TEAM THAT WE HAVE RUNS, YOU KNOW, IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY THAT OUR STUDENTS.
TO PLAY THE GAME. OUR STUDENTS DO THAT ON THEIR OWN ANYWAY, BUT COME TOGETHER AS A GROUP AND DO IT AS A TEAM, AND TO HAVE THAT COLLABORATION, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT IN OUR COUNTY. RIGHT? RIGHT. AND DO YOU HAVE A TEACHER IN MIND? I MEAN, AS A TEACHER SIGNED UP TO DO IT, OR ARE YOU GOING TO WAIT TO SEE IF IT'S APPROVED? AND THEN WE HAVE A LOT OF TEACHER INTEREST.
OKAY. I HAVE MORE I HAVE AT LEAST THREE.
KIND OF SPEARHEADING IT MORE FOR US.
OKAY. AND THEY'RE WILLING TO DO IT FOR RIGHT NOW AT NO COST.
OKAY. WHAT IS THE WILL OF THE BOARD? I HAVE TO CREATE THE NEW STUDENT CLUB AT JJ MOORE.
BEFORE. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL.
YOU NEED ME TO SAY THAT AGAIN, MISS KIRK? I'M SORRY. YES, PLEASE.
I MOVE TO ADD THE NEW STUDENT CLUB E SPORTS E CLUB AT JJ MOORE AND NB CLEMENTS JUNIOR HIGH.
SECOND ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MISS TAYLOR.
[5. 2024 VSBA Business Honor Roll - Lisa Pennycuff]
THE 2024 VSB BUSINESS HONOR ROLL.LOCAL BUSINESSES HAVE THE POWER TO SHAPE COMMUNITY ATTITUDES ABOUT PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND THE VSBA HONOR ROLL IS A WAY FOR LOCAL SCHOOL DIVISIONS TO RECOGNIZE LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR THEIR SUPPORT, ESPECIALLY AS SCHOOLS FACE INCREASING BUDGET UNCERTAINTY.
[02:00:02]
THE BUSINESS HONOR ROLL HELPS THE DISTRICT SAY THANK YOU FOR THEIR VITAL CONTRIBUTIONS.THOSE THREE ARE DESTINATION CHURCH, PRINCE GEORGE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, AND HOPEWELL MOOSE LODGE.
I'D LIKE TO ASK FOR YOU ALL TO CONSIDER THAT.
OKAY. QUESTIONS OR ARE Y'ALL READY TO DO A MOTION? I LIKE TO MOVE IT INTO ACTION.
IT IS ACTION THAT MAKE A MOTION.
I WANT TO MAKE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE RECOMMENDATION.
I SECOND. ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MR. JOHNSON. YES.
THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT, CORE CURRICULUM ADOPTION.
[6. Virginia Literacy Act Core Curriculum Adoption for Grades K-5, Abbie Martin and Robin Germanos]
ABBY MARTIN AND ROBIN GERMANOS.GOOD EVENING AGAIN, BOARD MEMBERS.
DOCTOR PENNYCOOK. WE COME TO YOU TONIGHT TO REVIEW OUR PROCESS FOR OUR TEXTBOOK ADOPTION FOR THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.
WE WANTED TO GIVE YOU KIND OF A TIMELINE OF WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
LOOK AT THAT RECOMMENDATION FROM THE VDOE.
THEY DID SOME PROS AND CONS TO EACH ONE OF THE PROGRAMS FOR US TO LOOK AT.
AND THE READING TEAM AND I, ALONG WITH DOCTOR SWANSON, LOOKED AT THOSE RATING SCALES AND LOOKED AT THE PROS AND CONS OF EACH ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS. WE SELECTED THREE THAT WE THOUGHT WOULD MEET THE NEEDS OF PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY THAT HAD SUPERIOR RATINGS, AND WE CHOSE OPEN COURT, BENCHMARK ADVANCE, AND HMH INTO READING.
IN NOVEMBER, I CONTACTED THOSE SALES REPS, AND THEY SENT SAMPLE MATERIALS FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE TO ALL FIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SO THAT OUR STAFF COULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO START LOOKING THROUGH THOSE MATERIALS.
AND THEN IN FEBRUARY, WE HAD PRESENTATIONS FROM THOSE THREE COMPANIES JUST TO COME OUT AND GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF HOW THEIR PROGRAM WORKED SO THAT WE COULD USE THE STATE RUBRIC TO KIND OF ASSESS THOSE PROGRAMS AND DETERMINE THE NEEDS OF OUR DIVISION.
AND THEN THOSE TEAM MEMBERS WOULD GO BACK AND SHARE THOSE PRESENTATION AND THE INFORMATION THAT THEY LEARNED WITH THEIR SCHOOL TEAMS. DARREN, FEBRUARY 20TH 1ST TO MARCH THE 6TH.
THEN IN MARCH, THE BUILDING LEVEL ADMINISTRATORS MET WITH EACH ONE OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL GRADE LEVEL TEAMS USING THE STATE RUBRIC AND GOING THROUGH THOSE PRESENTATIONS WITH THEIR TEXTBOOK COMMITTEES AND WITH THE READING SPECIALISTS IN EACH ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS, AND MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT THEY THOUGHT WOULD BE THE NEEDS OF THE DIVISION.
AND THEN DOCTOR MARTIN AND I MET WITH EACH ONE OF THE PRINCIPALS TO HEAR THE FEEDBACK FROM EACH ONE OF THEIR TEAMS. AND SO THE PRINCIPALS UNANIMOUSLY DECIDED, WITH THE INPUT OF ALL OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS, THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO BRING FORWARD.
INTO READING AS OUR NEW CORE CURRICULUM FOR K-5.
BUCHMEYER DIDN'T ADD ANYTHING.
THE COST OF THIS PARTICULAR EXPENSE, THIS NEW TEXTBOOK RESOURCE IS $770,367.60, AND THAT WILL COVER ALL CLASSROOM TEACHERS, SPECIALISTS AND INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE ALL THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED FOR SEVEN YEARS.
AND THAT WILL PROVIDE AS WELL, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES OVER THE SUMMER AND OPTIONS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO UTILIZE THOSE MATERIALS.
[02:05:03]
SO WE ARE PURCHASING THE WHOLE ENTIRE PROGRAM UPON YOUR APPROVAL.QUESTIONS? YES, I HAVE A COUPLE.
SO DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PARENTS PROVIDED FEEDBACK THAT WENT THROUGH? WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WRITTEN FEEDBACK, BUT MOST OF MY PRINCIPALS SAID THAT A LOT OF PARENTS CAME THROUGH AND LOOKED THROUGH THE MATERIALS, BUT WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WRITTEN FEEDBACK FROM STAFF, FROM PARENTS.
OKAY. AND THEN WHEN I WENT IN TO LOOK, I NOTICED I COULD BE READING IT WRONG.
SO EACH GRADE LEVEL, I THINK IT WAS LIKE 550.
BUT UNDER THE TEACHER ONE, IT HAD ONLY THREE THAT LIKE ON THE ESTIMATE THAT WE RECEIVED, IS THAT AT THE VERY BOTTOM? SO IT WOULD SAY LIKE THIS IS GRADE K STUDENT RESOURCE PACKAGE PRICE QUANTITY 550.
AND THEN VALUE OF ALL MATERIAL.
PACKAGE INCLUDES INTRO READING STUDENT MY BOOK SOFTWARE SEVEN YEAR GRADE K RIGHT.
BUT THEN UNDER TEACHER RESOURCE PACKAGE QUANTITY AND EACH GRADE LEVEL ONLY SHOWS THREE.
CAN I, CAN I SHOW YOU LIKE WHAT I SEE? I MEAN, I DON'T SO THIS IS AND AGAIN I COULD BE READING IT WRONG.
SO I SEE LIKE AND THEN THIS SAYS THE RESOURCE PACKAGE.
SO I BELIEVE THERE'S ONE ALREADY INCLUDED.
AND THEN THIS IS THE ADDITIONAL QUANTITY.
OH, BUT I WILL GO BACK AND DOUBLE CHECK THAT TO MAKE SURE.
YEAH. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE NOT ONLY GETTING SO ON THE SIDE.
IT DOES SAY FREE MATERIAL, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THEM SAY LIKE 22, 25.
SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE AGAIN THAT IT WAS EVERYONE WILL HAVE THEIR.
AND THOSE ARE EXCELLENT QUESTIONS.
MISS CHRIS. WE WORK WITH OUR TEXTBOOK REP AND WE ORIGINALLY SENT HER SOME ESTIMATES AND THEN RECEIVED ACTUALLY AN UPDATED QUOTE TODAY WITH ACTUAL NUMBERS THAT WE SENT HER OF.
AND IT COULD BE THAT SHE JUST ADDED THAT IN FROM THE ORIGINAL.
BUT I WILL MAKE SURE, OKAY, WE CAN DEFINITELY REACH BACK OUT AND DOUBLE CHECK.
OKAY. SO IS THERE MANUALS IN THERE FOR THE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AS WELL? BECAUSE I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING.
IN THERE THAT STATED ANYTHING OF THE MANUALS FOR THE SPECIAL EDUCATION.
SO HOW WILL THE MATERIAL BE USED FOR THE SPECIAL EDUCATION LIKE THE READING INTERVENTIONIST FOR, YOU KNOW, LIKE WHAT READING INTERVENTION ARE THEY GOING TO USE FOR LIKE THE SLOW OR STRUGGLING READERS SINCE THE SNP IS IS GONE NOW, THIS IS OUR CORE CURRICULUM FOR K-5, OUR INTERVENTION MATERIALS.
THERE ARE BUILT IN INTERVENTIONS WITHIN THIS PRODUCT.
THEY PLAN TO HAVE THAT APPROVED LIST BEFORE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, I BELIEVE, IN APRIL, AND WE WILL BE THEN BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH A RECOMMENDATION AND REVIEW OF THOSE MATERIALS.
SO THAT WOULD BE AN ADDITIONAL PURCHASE, CORRECT.
IS THAT THE SAME THING WITH SIX TO EIGHTH GRADE? BECAUSE I NOTICED THAT ONLY WENT TO FIFTH.
SO DO YOU KNOW, HAVE THEY DECIDED ANYTHING FOR THE SIX THROUGH EIGHT YET? THE LATEST UPDATE THAT WE RECEIVED IS GRADES SIX THROUGH EIGHT.
THEY THEY ARE NOT PLANNING TO REVIEW A LIST THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
AND WE DO ANTICIPATE MORE INFORMATION COMING FROM THE STATE NEXT, YOU KNOW, OVER THE SUMMER ABOUT GRADES SIX THROUGH EIGHT AND HOW TO PROCEED WITH THOSE GRADE LEVELS.
AND WE GO FOR FOUR HOURS, FOUR TIMES IN PREPARATION.
THAT WAS GOING TO BE MY NEXT THING.
SO IS THERE ONGOING TRAINING AS I MEAN, I KNOW THAT WE YOU KNOW, IF NEW TEACHERS COME IN, WILL THERE STILL BE ONGOING TRAINING FOR THEM AS WELL? YES, MA'AM. SO AS PART OF THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT NEXT YEAR, ALL OF OUR K-5 TEACHERS WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH TRAINING.
WHAT THE STATE IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON IS CANVAS MODULES THAT OUR TEACHERS WOULD GO THROUGH.
[02:10:08]
OKAY. AND THEN MY LAST ONE WOULD BE SO WHAT HAPPENS IF ENROLLMENT GOES UP OVER THEM? SEVEN BECAUSE YOU SAID IT'S FOR SEVEN LIKE.SO WE DO HAVE THE ABILITY TO PURCHASE OKAY.
YEAH. WE USE THE TEXTBOOK FUND TO TO PURCHASE THOSE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES EACH YEAR.
AND LIKE WE SAID WE HAVE A SEVEN YEAR BUYING PLAN BY CONTENT AREA.
SO THAT'S WHY WE KNOW WHEN WE HAVE AN EXPENSIVE ADOPTION LIKE READING.
AND WE OFTEN HAVE TO SEPARATE THE SECONDARY FROM THE ELEMENTARY BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE.
THAT'S FROM. OH, WHEN CAN I JUST ASK.
SO WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH, LIKE, THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF F AND P? LIKE WHAT'S WE OUR TEACHERS LOVE THE F AND P BOOKS.
AND SO WE WOULD USE THOSE FOR READ ALOUDS AND FOR EXTRA READING WITHIN THE CLASSROOM.
WE PLAN TO UTILIZE EVERY RESOURCE THAT WE POSSIBLY HAVE.
OKAY, I WAS JUST MAKING SURE WE WEREN'T ABOUT TO DUMP MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
YOU KNOW, THOSE BECOME INDEPENDENT READING TIME BOOKS.
OKAY. SO YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU GOT SOME UPDATED NUMBERS OR YOU PROVIDED UPDATED NUMBERS.
IS IS WHAT WE HAVE IN OUR PACKET.
IS THAT THE LATEST OR IS THAT IS THE LATEST INFORMATION YOU HAVE OKAY.
BECAUSE IT DOES JUST HAVE THE TEACHER.
LIKE THE WORKSHOP AND RESOURCE PACKAGE THREE.
AND THE READING WRITING WORKSHOP STUDENT RESOURCE PACKAGE 550.
SO THAT'S WHAT SHE'S TALKING ABOUT.
IT'S LIKE EACH THING IS DONE LIKE THAT.
GO BACK AND GO THROUGH THOSE NUMBERS WITH OUR REP.
BUT IT COULD BE THAT SHE JUST ADDED IN FROM THE OLD QUOTE.
ANY MORE QUESTIONS? OKAY. DO YOU ALL WANT TO APPROVE IT? I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE VIRGINIA LITERACY ACT.
CORE CURRICULUM ADOPTION FOR GRADES K THROUGH FIVE.
I'LL SECOND ROLL CALL, PLEASE.
YES. MRS. CRIST. YES, MISS TAYLOR? YES, MR. EALY? YES.
[7. VSBA Code of Conduct for School Board Members – Lisa Pennycuff]
NO, WAIT A MINUTE, DID I.VSBA! CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
I WOULD LIKE TO UPDATE, ADOPT THE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
SO I WILL MOVE THAT WE ADOPT THE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
I'LL SECOND. ROLL CALL, PLEASE.
MR. JOHNSON. YES, MR. ELY? YES.
OKAY. CALENDAR CONSIDERATIONS FOR BANKED DAYS.
[8. Calendar Considerations for Banked Days - Lisa Pennycuff]
THANK YOU. PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS TWO BANKED DAYS REMAINING.EARLIER TODAY, THE INSTRUCTION TEAM AND I ALSO DISCUSSED THIS WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT FORWARD BY A COUPLE OF A COUPLE OF BOARD MEMBERS AND STAFF MEMBERS TO ASK ABOUT THOSE DAYS.
THE RECOMMENDATION IS TO DETERMINE IF IT IS THE WILL OF THE BOARD TO SCHEDULE THESE AS POSSIBLE.
AND I SEE MR. MCCALLISTER SHAKING HIS HEAD, BECAUSE THAT IS THE DAY THAT THE SENIORS HAVE PLANNED TO VISIT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS FOR THEIR ELEMENTARY WALKS.
SO ONE THING THAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS YEAR IS THAT WE END AT THE END OF MAY.
[02:15:01]
THAT ARE PLANNED SO WE CAN MAKE IT WORK, BUT WE NEED TO KNOW SOONER RATHER THAN LATER SO THAT WE CAN MAKE THAT ADJUSTMENT.SO I GUESS MY QUESTION WOULD BE SINCE I REACHED OUT TO YOU THIS MORNING REGARDING THIS, WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL PLAN WITH THE TWO DAYS? BECAUSE WE'VE ALWAYS THAT I CAN REMEMBER, HAVE GIVEN THE FRIDAY BEFORE MEMORIAL DAY OFF SINCE I CAN REMEMBER AND THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES I REMEMBER IN THE PAST THAT IT WAS EITHER THE FRIDAY BEFORE SPRING BREAK, AND I THINK ONE TIME BECAUSE SUNDAY, HOW IT FELL BEFORE EASTER WAS ON SUNDAY.
SO THEN IT WAS MONDAY WAS GIVEN AS WELL, SO I GUESS.
I MEAN, I WAS ONLY GOING OFF OF KIND OF WHAT HAS BEEN DONE IN THE PAST.
I KNOW THAT IN THE FIRST SEMESTER.
SO TECHNICALLY, THE KIDS THAT DID GO TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY WENT TO SCHOOL THREE DAYS MORE THAN NEEDED.
AND I JUST WANTED TO ENSURE THAT THIS TIME WE DON'T LET THESE TWO GO TO WASTE EVEN.
AND I UNDERSTAND ABOUT, YOU KNOW, ABSENTEEISM AND ACCREDITATION.
WE CERTAINLY DON'T WANT TO PUNISH ANYONE.
HAVE WE EVER GONE INTO A YEAR WITH A BANK DAY? YES, WE HAVE RECENTLY OR WITHIN MR. F.W. LEWIS WOULD PROBABLY BE ABLE.
I WOULD SAY THAT, YES, RECENTLY WE'VE TRIED TO GIVE BACK, BUT SOMETIMES WE END UP WITH 1 OR 2 JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE SOLS AND WE HAVE THOSE SPAN THE MONTH OF MAY FOR US.
SO IF WE YOU KNOW, WHEN NOW THAT WE HAVE A OUR SCHOOL YEAR ENDING MAY, YOU KNOW, AT THE END OF MAY, IT'S A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT TO PUT THOSE DAYS BACK.
SO, YOU KNOW, WE WE CERTAINLY ARE HAPPY TO DO IT.
WE JUST NEED TO KNOW SO THAT THOSE ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE MADE.
BUT NOW FOR THE SECOND THEY'RE TAKING THEM.
WE HAVE WINDOWS OF TIME THAT WE CAN TAKE.
AND SO THE STUDENTS TAKE THE SWELLS AND THEN THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RETAKES.
AND THAT GENERALLY GOES PRETTY CLOSE TO THE END OF THE YEAR WITH THAT.
YEAH. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT.
SO WE TRY TO GIVE THE WELL TAKEN IS GOING TO BE MAY.
LET ME SEE IF I HAVE MY DATES WITH ME.
SO THE GRADE FIVE WRITING SOL IS APRIL 30TH AND I DO NOT THINK I HAVE ONE SCHEDULED BEFORE THEN.
SO. AND WE CONTINUE WITH OUR SOLS AND RETAKES.
WELL INTO WELL INTO THE END OF MAY.
SO THE CHILDREN THAT TAKE PAPER PENCIL SOL THEY'RE GOING TO CUT IT.
I MEAN, BY THE TIME YOU GET THEIR RESULTS BACK, HOW ARE THEY GOING TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RETEST? IF IT DOES TAKE LONGER TO GET THE PAPER AND PENCIL RETAKES BACK.
SOL. TAKE IT. RETAKES GO TILL THE 23RD.
BUT WE'RE HAPPY TO WORK WITH IT.
BUT THIS YEAR WE WE HAVE LESS TIME BECAUSE SCHOOL AND SOONER.
OKAY. DID I HEAR YOU SAY THE 24TH IS A PLANNED.
DAY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL FOR GO TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
THE SENIOR WALKS WHERE THEY RIDE THE BUSSES TO THEIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND WALK THE HALLS.
SO WHEN WOULD WE GET THAT RESCHEDULED? MR. MCALLISTER. MR. MANOS WOULD. THANK YOU.
[02:20:04]
WE CERTAINLY WANT EVERYBODY TO ENJOY THEIR TIME.YOU KNOW, WE KNOW HOW HARD EVERYONE WORKS AND WE WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT WE APPRECIATE THEM.
AND I THINK THAT'S A POWERFUL WAY TO SAY THANK YOU.
ANY MORE QUESTIONS? OKAY. WHAT'S THE WILL OF THE BOARD? I MOVE TO CHANGE.
MARCH 29TH AND MAY 4TH TO STUDENT FOURTH OR 24TH, 24TH, MAY 24TH WOULD BE MARCH 29TH AND THEN MAY 24TH.
THOSE ARE THE TWO REMAINING DAYS AS STUDENT AND STAFF HOLIDAYS.
AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WAS MUCH EASIER THAN WHEN WE TRIED TO DO THE ELECTION DAY OFF.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED BEFORE WE GO INTO CLOSED SESSION?
[L. CLOSED SESSION (If needed)]
OKAY, I NEED A MOTION TO GO INTO CLOSED SESSION, AND I'M GOING TO GIVE FIVE MINUTES BEFORE AFTER WE GO INTO CLOSED SESSION.I MAKE A MOTION TO GO INTO CLOSED SESSION PURSUANT TO SECTION 2.2-3711 OF CODE OF VIRGINIA.
SECONDED. MR. JOHNSON. YES, MISS.
I WANT TO CALL THE MARCH 11TH SCHOOL BOARD MEETING BACK IN ORDER.
[M. PUBLIC SESSION (if needed)]
I NEED A MOTION TO COME OUT OF CLOSED SESSION.I MAKE A MOTION TO RETURN TO OPEN SESSION AND CERTIFICATION.
I MOVE THAT WE CAN RECONVENE IN OPEN SESSION AND STATE.
THE PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD HAS CONVENED A CLOSED MEETING ON THIS DATE, PURSUANT TO AN AFFIRMATIVE RECORDED VOTE AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE VIRGINIA FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT AND PURSUANT TO SECTION 2.2-3712 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA, REQUIRES A CERTIFICATION THAT THIS SCHOOL BOARD.
THAT SUCH CLOSED MEETING WAS CONDUCTED IN CONFORMITY WITH THE VIRGINIA LAW.
THE PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD HEREBY CERTIFIES THAT, TO THE BEST OF EACH MEMBERS KNOWLEDGE, ONLY PUBLIC BUSINESS MATTERS LAWFULLY EXEMPTED OR FROM OPEN MEETING REQUIREMENTS BY THE VIRGINIA LAW WERE DISCUSSED IN THE CLOSED MEETING TO WHICH THE CERTIFICATION APPLIES, AND ONLY PUBLIC BUSINESS MATTERS AS WERE IDENTIFIED IN THE MOTION CONVENING THE CLOSED MEETING WERE HEARD, DISCUSSED, OR CONSIDERED.
SECOND. ROLL CALL, PLEASE, MR. ELY. YES.
TAYLOR? YES. MRS. ANDREWS? YES.
IS THERE ANY OTHER BUSINESS THAT NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED? AND MOVE TO ADJOURN.
I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY.
AND PERSONNEL, MADAM MATTER ADDED THIS EVENING.
I'M SORRY. NOW I'LL MOVE TO ADJOURN.
YES. MRS. ANDREWS? YES. AND MISS SIMMERS HAS TEXTED THAT SHE IS HAPPY TO BE PART OF PRINCE GEORGE, WHO NOW
HAS.
